Who owns my domain name?
Domain names are complicated beasts and, if not dealt with properly, can end up causing major problems when you want to switch or make changes.
It’s easy to find out the state of play with your domain—just go to:
http://who.is/ and type your domain name in the box—the details will then appear.
As a general rule, always make sure you have access to the control panel of your domain name, or know which company has registered it for you so you can get them to make changes for you, if required.
In our experience, it’s a bad idea to get another individual to register it in their name. Use your own name or the details of a trusted company with a domain policy. You therefore retain ownership and control should any relationships break down.
